Energy Savings Program (ESP)

Free Home Weatherization Upgrades for a More Comfortable & Efficient Home
The Energy Savings Program provides eligible Alabama families with no-cost home weatherization improvements that help keep homes cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter, and more comfortable year-round.

Delivered through the Alabama Resiliency Fund, ESP brings together trusted partners to identify common energy issues and make practical improvements in homes where they are needed most.

How the Energy Savings Program Works

  • STEP 1
Check your address

Enter your home address to see if ESP is currently serving your neighborhood. If we’re not there yet, you can join our interest list so we can reach out as the program grows.

  • STEP 2
Apply

If your address is in an active ESP area, fill out a short application. We will ask basic questions about your home and household to confirm eligibility. There is no cost to apply

  • STEP 3

In‑Home Energy Assessment

If approved, a trained energy team will schedule a visit. They will:

Review how air, heat, and cooling move through your home

  • Identify common weatherization issues like air leaks or missing insulation
  • Install simple efficiency items on the spot, with your permission, such as LED bulbs or faucet aerators

They will review your home energy assessment with you and discuss any larger improvements and get your permission before any work begins.

  • STEP 4

Upgrades Installed

Program contractors will return to complete approved upgrades – such as adding attic insulation, sealing air leaks, or tuning up or replacing heating and cooling equipment where needed. These improvements are free to you as an ESP participant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will you also help with internet access or other services?2026-01-16T23:30:47+00:00

In some ADEN communities, ESP is coordinated with broadband and digital access projects so that homes become both more efficient and more connected. Where available, our team will share information about these options.

How long will it take to get upgrades once I’m approved?2026-01-16T23:29:11+00:00

Timing depends on your availability, contractor schedules, the number of homes in the area, and the type of work needed. Our team will keep you updated along the way and do our best to complete work as quickly as possible.

What information will you collect from me?2026-01-16T23:27:57+00:00

We will ask for your contact information, address, basic details about your home, and some limited income and household information to confirm eligibility and measure the program’s impact. Your information is kept private and is only used for program purposes.

Will my electric and/or gas bill go down right away?2026-02-05T19:19:31+00:00

Every home is different, but most families see lower bills after upgrades are installed—especially during very hot or very cold months. Typical improvements can reduce energy use by around 25%, which can mean estimated savings of $520+ per year, depending on your home and usage.

I rent my home. Can I still apply?2026-01-16T23:41:20+00:00

No, the program is limited to homeowners at this time. We hope to expand our offerings to renters in the future.

Do I have to pay anything for the Energy Savings Program?2026-01-16T23:39:19+00:00

No. ESP upgrades are provided at no cost to eligible participants. The program is funded through the Alabama Resiliency Fund with support from partners like Alabama Power, the Alabama Digital Education Network (ADEN) and other community organizations.

Will someone come to my home more than once?2026-01-16T23:26:41+00:00

Yes, in many cases there are at least two visits: one for the assessment and direct install equipment, and another for any larger upgrades like insulation or HVAC work.

What if my home has serious problems like roof leaks or mold?2026-01-16T23:25:47+00:00

Some serious issues – such as roof leaks, major structural damage, or unsafe wiring – may need to be fixed before we can complete ESP work. In these cases, our team will point you toward other local resources when possible.

What kinds of homes can get help?2026-01-16T23:23:16+00:00

ESP serves traditional single‑family homes and manufactured homes, with the goal to serve other housing types as the program grows. Homes must be located in a current ESP community and meet basic health and safety requirements so that weatherization work can be done safely.
